Maybe not legend ... but definitely an origin story.
If you’ve ever looked at one of our coffee bags and thought, “What’s up with the geometric woolly mammoth?” — we wrote this blog post to add just enough context to keep you in the loop while preserving the mystery.
It started with a trip to Mammoth.
Back in 2021, we were tossing around the idea of starting a coffee roasting company. Nothing official — just some long talks and a shared enthusiasm for hanging out together and drinking delicious coffee.
That same year, Trevor signed up for his first 100k ultramarathon in Bishop. So we all headed down to stay in Mammoth for the weekend to hang out, eat snacks, and chase him around all day. Between the trails, the downtime, and the late-night kitchen hangs, something clicked.
In many ways, that weekend was the unofficial start of Prescription Roasting.

We needed a 'something'.
Fast forward a few months, the coffee was real, orders were going out, but we needed something to pull it all together — a logo, a symbol, something recognizable.
We kept circling around ideas. We loved how Stumptown had their horseshoe — it wasn’t too literal, but it felt right. We wanted our version of that.
And… came up with ... nothing.
Then it hit us. Literally above our heads.
Spring 2022: we’re back in Mammoth, still kicking around ideas for branding. Same vibe — late-night ideas, early-morning brews, making silly product videos, running trails.
And on the wall above the couch we’d been lounging on all weekend? A geometric woolly mammoth. A super cool piece of art made by none other than Chelsea (Trevor’s wife). We had been sitting under it the whole time.
Finally, one of us looks up and says, “What about the Mammoth?”
That was pretty much that. We were insanely stoked, and Chelsea didn't seem to mind. We have officially leveled up this operation.
Not where we live — but where it started.
None of us are based in Mammoth. It’s not where we roast or ship from. But in a lot of ways, it is where Prescription Roasting was born. The idea, the energy, the conversations — and, eventually, the logo — all came from there.
So, I guess that’s the origin story. It’s a mammoth because… well, that's a symbol of where it all began. And it looks so sweet.
Sometimes the best ideas are right above your head the whole time.
